African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms (AfDec) Coalition commissioned 19 articles by African researchers, academics, journalists, and human and digital rights activists on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on digital rights in Africa as part of the Securing human rights online in Africa through a strong and active ‘African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms’ network initiative. The initiative aims to promotes human rights standards and principles of openness in internet policy formulation and implementation on the continent, guided by the 13 principles established in the African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms. At this year’s 2020 Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF), the African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedom (AfDec) coalition hosted a session titled Key issues in data protection policy making and implementation, that explored key data protection policy making and implementation issues on the continent. This session kicked off with a presentation on the main aspects of the AfDec Privacy and personal data protection in Africa Advocacy Toolkit, currently in its finalization stage. The session was followed by three lightning talks that map key issues in data protection policy making processes and implementation on the continent. The talks explored artificial intelligence, gender, and the right to privacy; highlighting data protection concerns for African business and the sharing of personal data protection regulation experiences.

The African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms Coalition endorsed an open letter to Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google services, in which they urged the tech giant to contest a request by the Ugandan government to ban over 14, mainly opposition and citizen journalists’, Youtube channels. The African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms Coalition (AfDec Coalition) in collaboration with the Centre for Human Rights (CHR), University of Pretoria: Expression, Information, and Digital Rights Unit hosted a virtual conference on the challenges and prospects of privacy and data protection in Africa with the aim of establishing and strengthening a human rights-based approach to data protection on the African continent.
